This is a post from the Law Office of Joseph P. McClelland, not a candidate to replace Stevens.
United States Supreme Court Justice Stevens will retire. He announced his decision today. Justice Stevens served 34 years on the bench. Justice Stevens in a letter to President Obama stated that he had “concluded that it would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court’s next termâ€. Stevens was appointed by President Gerald Ford in December 1975.
President Obama and the Democratically held Senate will vote on confirmation of the new pick in the future. This will be the second Supreme Court Justice that President Obama will appoint. The last Justice was Sodamayor. Her confirmation was quite heated, and this was before the health care debate. No matter who President Obama nominates will face a tough nomination process due to Republicans likely voting no for political reasons.
