Thoughts on Small Town Practice

The home office base for The McClelland Law Firm and the Georgia lawyer writing this article is in Jackson, Georgia, a small town about 40 miles south of downtown, but considered metro Atlanta at the same time.  Growing up in Butts County, I hung my hat on the fact that a kind of lived in Atlanta.  Especially when I traveled somewhere I always said I was from Atlanta.  Then, if they asked me a question like do I know that restaurant over by the Fox, I would have to say that I live in the suburbs.

When I am representing a client in a car accident in Jackson, Georgia, it is not uncommon for a friend, relative or the client themselves to have another legal issue that needs addressing.  You really tend to become the family lawyer as opposed to a personal injury lawyer or family lawyer.  Usually, it is something small like an uncontested divorce or they need a will.  Sometimes, they need criminal representation or another legal matter for a family member who is the back sheep of the bloodline.

As a legal professional, they look to me handle all of their cases, but this is an error. Somethings I can and will do as a matter of principal.  Something interfere with the personal injury practice, so I will not do them. The client is always disappointed at first, but after an explanation they understand that in the long run, doing a felony criminal case when I have a full car accident litigation calender is a fool’s game.  That is my thought on small town practice by a car accident lawyer.
