Fourth of July Safety

This is year two of my firm wishing and hoping everyone has a happy and safe holiday this forth of July.  My birthday is just a few days after it, so I love this part of the year.  What I do not love is all of the accidents that come.  Many people focus on car accidents, and there are plenty of those, but there is one that most people do not think of.  That is boating accidents.  If you are out on Lake Lanier or Jackson Lake or any lake in between, you must watch out for other boat drivers this holiday season.  Many people are not looking for the skier who fell down because they only drive the boat once or twice a year on the 4th of July.

Let’s all be safe this weekend.  The 4 of July can be a dangerous weekend for all of us on the road.  With the recession fewer people will be driving longer distances, but the number of cars on the road will still be higher.  People are bound to party with their friends and family.  They will be a little more loose than they normally would.  And this may lead to bad results.  When a DUI driver is out there, you can never fully know what they will do.  Will they slam on the brakes?  Will they drive off the road?  Will they swerve into the next lane and hit you?  Who knows, and that is what makes them so dangerous.  It is usually never you that causes an accident, but if you were overly cautious, you might help them help you not get hurt.  It is just a thought, but be double sober for them.  It might save your live.

Let us all take extra precaution and make sure the other drivers around us are not being foolish.  If you notice such behavior, I always make sure to get out of their way, or to be sure that when they crash I will have ample time to stop or go around them.  Of course I would still call 911, but safety first, then teamwork.

One more thing to worry about is playing with fireworks.  Those things are really dangerous.  It is not difficult to get an injury when a firework goes off in your hand. Kids should not play with fireworks without  an adult around to monitor the activities.  Always provide your child with some basic safety tips if they are going to another’s house.  Independence is day is for being with friends and family, not being in the emergency room.

Also, since I am a dog owner and lover, be careful that your pets stay far away from those lighting the fire crackers because that is a hot zone that has a higher chance of substantial injury than those standing further away.
