HISTORY OF HENRY COUNTY
Henry County, Georgia was created by the Georgia State Legislature in 1821 from land acquired from the Creek Indian. Henry’s original land area was much larger than it is today. It was most of present day Metro Atlanta. Within one year, the county was broken up and became present day DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette and Newton Counties. It did not stop there. In future years the county was broken up even more to include Clayton, Spalding, Rockdale and Butts County.
In the beginning Henry County was unspoiled land, having just been ceded from the Creek Nation. Before Henry County became Henry County, the Creeks were the only ones here. The Creek Indians left their mark through place names, Indian Mounds, arrowheads, and pottery found Henry County.
The area is home to the Shingleroof Methodist Campground, which was used for training for Confederate forces during the Civil War.
Henry County hosts several major sporting events each year.
The Chick-Fil-A Charity Championship which is the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour Event, is held at the Eagles Landing Country Club here in Henry County. Every year this event brings the national spotlight to the area.
